Dat Face!

Equine expressions are always interesting as part of reading a horse’s body language.  Interpreting their mood and predicting behavior is important and can be conveyed in modeldom as well!

Sometimes it’s a twitchy lip or pinned ears, maybe an innocent “cute” look or simple turn of the head, but the eye and face express quite a lot.  Some are just regal or graceful looking, others are loaded with emotion and attitude.  Markings, forelocks, and teeth, whisker bumps, pooky lips, and wrinkles add to the appearance.  Eyewhites and other indicators help us to gain better understanding of the animal.

Other critters, too!  Some of the best faces I see every day are canine.  Real or model, their soulful expressions can say so much without words.  Don’t forget bas  relief and flatwork faces as well!

What are some of your favorite “model faces”?  I have always loved certain OF mold expressions and am constantly amazed at the detail In CMs and ARs.  Many Chinas also have beautiful faces and painted eyes.

  1. I love the faces on all of Breyer's jumpers: the old jumping horse, Newsworthy, Bristol, and the Stablemate jumper. They all look so eager and happy as they take to the air. The faces on the Mini Whinny jumpers are a little too small to judge, but their overall impression is one of enthusiasm too.

  2. Yassss! Probably why I have a penchant for resin jumpers too...that “look of eagles”!

  3. I love the "kindly" look of Breyer's Marabella mould - I know she was sculpted as a broodmare, but even without that knowledge there's something sweet and gentle about the look in her eyes.
