Realistic Paint Patterns

I often discuss modeldom and art with real horse people.  Sometimes genetics and techniques come up.  A recent conversation was about the lethal white foals produced in Paint breedings - I really
love frame overo pattern.  There was talk of mapping and cat tracks and facial markings and stockings...I mentioned points of origin in color.

Sometimes the pattern is built around large spots or jagged patches of color that tend to start at the flank, girth, head, or rear of the animal.  Big uneven blobs of color slapped on a model do not a good pattern make!  Photo references are Invaluable!  I also discussed coat textures and what shows up when the coat is wet, especially on a lighter animal.  Great info and inspiration!

Hope to etch (and paint!) some more Paints (and Appies!)...
