Equine Color Genetics: Chimerism
Somatic gene mutations affect coat color in a variety of mammals. Some forms are unique and interesting, expressed only in an area while others affect the whole body. Some breeds even have names for such oddly marked animals, but they are not likely to reproduce the trait. I once trained a couple retrievers with black spot phenomenon. Recent research on coat patterns (like brindle) turned up a few interesting examples of equine chimerism. In testing colors on a model, I think I’ve inadvertently created one of these!
