Holy Grail: Breyer Decorators

The elusive Breyer Decorators were produced back in the 50’s in four colors on a handful of molds.  I and other collectors would love to add a piece to our herds.  They are easy to recognize once one knows what to look for and are differentiated from contemporary versions by their masked manes, tails, and stockings.  These are the ultimate collecting “holy grail” for me - to find one, just one, “in the wild” at a realistic, obtainable price.  I joke that I’d take a beat up 3 legged one, but that is probably true!

I was lucky to be surrounded by model collectibility goodness at Lynn’s amazing Happy Trails Show this Spring - be sure to check out the FAMulous show in IN (sadly I will miss this one), sure to be a Collectibility Dream!  Everything from vintage packaging to test pieces to presentation models of Breyer’s earlier era.  Woodgrains!  Glossy Appaloosas!  Variations galore.

Here is a brief education by example of the original decorator colors:

Copenhagen - a dapple blue on the Five Gaiter mold

Florentine - dappled gold on the Running Foal

Gold Charm - a stunning semi-rearing Mustang

Wedgewood - the solid blue on spectacular Mustang, Running Foal, and Fighting Stallion

(Doesn’t her tablecloth set them off beautifully?!?)
Thank you Lynn, for hosting this fun opportunity to drool over beautiful
Vintage models!  It was incredible to see so many lovely pieces in one place!  These are owned and shown by several different collectors in the Midwest (where Breyer originated).  THANK YOU!

So, these are the mighty four Art Deco colors of Breyer 50’s era - be sure to call me if you find one while out thrifting! Some aspects of my collecting have come full circle with dreams fulfilled, but this is the one that will never die...the search for the blue and gold holy grail!

  1. In my younger collecting years I loved the Decos so much I decided they were their own breed, tracing back to a foundation stallion by the name of, you guessed it, Decorator.
